Vintage Watch Condition Examination
This Submariner is in great vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The bezel is in great condition with light wear. The bezel has aged to an attractive super dark grey; the pip is a lovely cream color. The dial is in overall excellent condition with light patina. The lume on the dial has aged to a lovely light cream color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a matching creamy color as the lume on the dial. The folded bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon. The clasp shows signs of polishing.
Vintage Rolex Submariner 1680 Stainless Steel Oyster
Rolex introduced the reference 1680 around 1969 and it was in production until roughly 1979. This was the first Submariner to feature the date function and Rolex still offers date and no-date models to this day. This example has the word “Submariner” written in red text and collectors refer to these as the “Red Submariner.” Rolex did this until around 1975 and then they switched to all white text.
This watch is in overall beautiful condition and comes directly from the original owner. The lume has aged to a fantastic pale yellow creamy color which pairs nicely with the beautiful bezel that has aged to a dark grey. Collectors have identified six different “Red” 1680 dial variations. The watch features a Mark VI dial and this dial variation is distinguished by the feet first depth rating with closed 6s in the depth rating. This watch also features a folded link bracelet with error divers extension. Rolex misspelled patented on the divers extension, it reads “Pateted.” These error bracelets are becoming more sought after by collectors because they bring the watch to the next level of rarity. The bracelet does not have a date code on the clasp which is correct for the year of production (1974). If you have been in the market for a lovely “Red Sub” with box and papers this is worth considering!
